Since joining Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014, Yann Sommer quickly becoming one of the best goalkeeper in Bundesliga today.
When Marc-Andre Ter Stegen left to joined Barcelona, Sommer had to deal with high expectations.
But he proved his ability in his first season, helping Gladbach to finish third in the league, their highest ever league position since 1978 and was awarded as club’s Player of the Year.
Of course, there’s ups and downs during his career, but Sommer continued to perform his best and remained as one of Gladbach’s most important members.
“I believe in our team, I am optimistic because I know what this team can do, what kind of performances this team can bring on the pitch. We will do everything.
“We train hard, will try to improve over the last weeks, will try to win our games and will try to bring really good and consistent performances onto the pitch. That is our goal.”
One of Sommer’s brilliant moment in Bundesliga was when he saves the ball using only one finger when Gladbach played Bayern few months back.
“I have trained my reactions a lot over the past years because, as a goalkeeper, you have a lot of situations where the ball is coming at you very quickly from not very far away.
“So, you need to have good reactions and need to be quick on the line. I try to improve on that every week.”
This season is no exceptions, as Gladbach currently sit fourth with 56 points but they needed to win all remaining matches to qualify for Champions League next season.
That is not going to be easy, however, as they travel to Allianz Arena this Saturday, facing a difficult task of playing the current league leaders Bayern Munich.
“Every game in the Bundesliga is special. Every game is a good game because all of the teams are really interesting, it is a good league.
Of course, Bayern are a world-class team who are always playing for the Champions League title and the German title. We want to give them a really difficult challenge in the game and we try to win every game in this league.”
