Frenchman Paul Pogba is set to leave Man United on his Bosman status come the end of the season and former United lynchpin and goalscorer Wayne Rooney was asked for his views about the midfielder’s status quo.
The United legendary icon has no doubts that the club ‘need to let’ the French World Cup winner leave the club this summer.
Pogba made a return to Old Trafford for an £89m world-record transfer fee in 2016 but since then has only managed to win just two trophies during his second stint at the club, and has ended up being more of a controversy among United supporters as many feel he’s never delivered on his part of the bargain and his potential. Apart from the blight of injuries that has been the scourge for the midfielder for the better part of his second stint at United, Old Trafford’s faithful diehards have found disfavor with the player’s lack of commitment to the club on and off the pitch, evidenced more than once during the international breaks with scandalous headlines about his ambition to play with La Liga giants Real Madrid.
The self-indulgent midfielder has allowed his contract at Old Trafford to run down, allowing him to leave United on a free transfer at the end of the season, exactly 10 years after he last left the club similarly for free. Former United talisman Rooney, making his second appearance on Monday Night Football, admitted he doesn’t think the move has worked when asked about Pogba’s second spell in Manchester.
United’s record goalscorer revealed he is not in favor of a late contract extension for the Frenchman ahead of his scheduled summer exit.
“It’s got to point now where it’s probably better for him to move on,” Rooney told Sky Sports.
“I think if Paul is honest with himself, he hasn’t had the impact he would have liked since he returned to Manchester United. I watch him play for France and he’s a completely different player.
“Ability, his vision, control of the game is there every game for France. It just hasn’t quite worked for him at Manchester United. There’s a few players they need to let go.”
