Will the real Bruno please stand up?

Newcastle United’s Brazilian midfielder, Bruno Guimaraes, celebrated his team’s 4-1 victory over Manchester United at St. James’ Park with a cheeky gesture. After scoring the fourth goal, Guimaraes appeared to shout “I am the Bruno” while pointing to his jersey, which read ‘Bruno G. 39’. This playful jab was in response to Newcastle fans’ chants of “there’s only one Bruno,” directed at Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes.

The win propelled Newcastle to fourth place in the Premier League, with Sandro Tonali opening the scoring, followed by an equalizer from Alejandro Garnacho. However, Newcastle dominated the second half with a brace from Harvey Barnes and Guimaraes’ late goal. The victory marked Newcastle’s first league double over Manchester United in 95 years and highlighted their strong push for Champions League qualification.

Despite the absence of head coach Eddie Howe due to health issues, Guimaraes dedicated the win to him, stating that the team played for their manager. Guimaraes expressed his admiration for Howe’s impact on the team’s success and hoped the victory would bring him joy during a challenging time.

Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes reflected on Manchester United’s defeat, acknowledging the team’s inability to maintain their first-half performance into the second. He emphasized the need for consistency and bravery in their upcoming matches.

The match also marked a significant milestone for Manchester United, as they suffered their 14th Premier League defeat this season, equaling their highest number of losses since the 1989-90 season. This result further complicates their already challenging season, with the team currently sitting in 13th place.
