The  Swedish media’s spin on Newcastle star Alexander Isak after embarrassing loss to Luxembourg

The Swedish media have weighed in on Newcastle United star Alexander Isak’s performance following Sweden’s surprising 1-0 loss to Luxembourg in an international friendly on Saturday. Despite his stellar form for Newcastle this season, with 23 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions, Isak struggled to make an impact against the lower-ranked opposition.

Isak, who was instrumental in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool last weekend, started as Sweden’s captain for the match. However, he was substituted after 60 minutes, and Swedish outlet Fotboll Skanalen gave him a modest 2/5 rating, noting: “Captain for the day and came close to making it 1-0 early. Offered technical brilliance in some isolated actions but overall Sweden needs more from the star. Weak second.”

Despite Sweden dominating possession with 71% and outshooting Luxembourg, Isak and his teammates failed to break down their opponent’s organized defense. The Newcastle forward managed three shots, with only one on target, and completed 82% of his passes, but his influence on the game was limited.

Isak will look to bounce back when Sweden faces Northern Ireland in another friendly on Tuesday. After the international break, he will return to Newcastle, where the team continues its push for Champions League qualification and prepares to celebrate their Carabao Cup triumph on March 29.
