Paul Merson believes Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca’s job is in jeopardy if the team fails to win their next two Premier League matches against Southampton and Leicester City. The Sky Sports pundit suggests that dropping points in these games could lead to Maresca’s dismissal.
Chelsea’s recent form has been concerning. Despite a strong start to the season, they have only managed two wins in nine Premier League games since Boxing Day and were eliminated from the FA Cup by Brighton. This slump has caused them to drop to seventh place in the league standings.
Merson emphasized the importance of these upcoming matches, stating, “If they don’t win their next two games, the manager won’t be there”. He pointed out that Chelsea will be facing Southampton and Leicester, who are currently struggling in the Premier League.
Merson also highlighted Chelsea’s need to secure a Champions League spot to retain key players like Cole Palmer. He expressed concern about the team’s long-term plan, questioning the success of their long-term contracts and player development.
A significant issue for Chelsea is the recent dip in form of Cole Palmer. Merson suggests that Palmer’s struggles are linked to the absence of Nicolas Jackson, whose movement creates space for Palmer. With Jackson out of the team, Palmer is being marked more closely and forced to drop deeper.
Chelsea will be playing Southampton and Leicester at an opportune time, as both teams suffered heavy defeats in their recent matches.
