Gary Neville brutal with Ian Wright over Harry Kane to Arsenal transfer claim

Arsenal are on the prowl for a new striker during the summer transfer window and Ian Wright is smacking his lips in the hope that Harry Kane may actually fancy a tilt at becoming the all-time leading Premier League scorer donning Gunners colors.

However, equally quick to stomp out any such daydreams and giddying delusions that the former Arsenal ace is playing out in his head, Gary Neville has smugly claimed the Gunners don’t have even a whisker of a chance of signing Kane should the former Tottenham striker decide to return to England.

Kane surprised all and sundry when he suddenly ended his lengthy association with Tottenham Hotspur last summer to sign for Bayern Munich, although it could come as no surprise that he may well end his debut campaign at the Bundesliga without any silverware. The German giants are awkwardly trailing behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen by ten points and now have the Champions League as their only hope of silverware in 2023/24.

However, team performances aside, Kane is having a superb season individually, having scored 37 goals and provided 12 assists in all competitions to date. Such stellar performances have seen the 30-year-old striker immediately turn into a talismanic figure for Bayern after having filled the slot left vacant by Robert Lewandowski after the latter’s exit to join Barcelona in the LaLiga.

While Kane has now embarked on his new quest of winning silverware – an unaccomplished mission during his tenure at Spurs – with his new employers, many football aficionados are still cherishing the hope that it is only a matter of time before the prolific goalscorer returns to the Premier League to eclipse Alan Shearer’s all-time scoring record.

Top of the Premier League list with 260 goals to his name, Shearer is 47 strikes ahead of Kane’s 213. Neville admitted on the Stick To Football Podcast he had always believed Kane would remain in England until he had reached the top spot:  “I never thought he would go to Munich, I never thought he would leave the country, I thought he was destined to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League record.

“I just didn’t think he would go. For me the England record, I thought he would be that hung up about it, I thought he would go to a Premier League club to break the record. He may have had to go abroad to escape to come back.”

Neville continued by asking Ian Wright if he believes Kane will still have Shearer’s record “in his mind”, to which the Arsenal legend replied: “As long as he comes back to Arsenal, he will have a chance!” to which Neville retorted: “He is not going there!”

For those who can still recollect, Kane had actually been on the books of the Gunners as a youngster, joining the club at the age of eight but was released after only one year. Explaining why this decision was made at the time, ex-Arsenal academy director Liam Brady previously explained: “He was a bit chubby, he wasn’t very athletic but we made a mistake.”
