K-League finally kick off next month, after no more death in South Korea

South Korea’s success in flattening the curve of COVID-19 cases has allowed K-League season to finally kick off on May 8, but it will be played behind closed doors.

The Korea Professional Football League said in a statement that the league will continue to adhere with the government’s social distancing guidelines.

“If any player or member of the coaching staff is found to be infected with the virus during the season, that team will not play another match in the next two weeks.”

Defending champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors will host Suwon Samsung Bluewings in Jeonju in the league opener.

But the league will only host 27 matches and the bottom-placed side will be relegated to K League 2.

The Korea Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) on Friday reported just six new cases, the lowest number since the peak of 909 cases on Feb 28 as they became the first country hit by the COVID-19 outbreak after China.

The South Korea death toll remain at 240.
