Marcus Rashford’s permanent move to Aston Villa in doubt after latest developments

Marcus Rashford’s future remains uncertain as his anticipated permanent transfer from Manchester United to Aston Villa has hit a major obstacle. While Rashford joined Villa on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 season, recent developments have cast doubt on whether the move will become permanent.

Rashford moved to Aston Villa on loan in February 2025, with Villa covering a significant portion of his wages-reportedly around 75%-and an option to buy the forward for approximately £40 million at the end of the season.

Despite not scoring, Rashford has contributed four assists in nine appearances, helping to boost Villa’s creativity and earning a recall to the England national team.

Rashford’s high wages, believed to be around £350,000 per week, present a challenge for Villa. Unless Rashford agrees to a substantial wage cut, Villa may struggle to afford the deal.

The player is reportedly keen to play Champions League football. If Villa fail to qualify for the Champions League, Rashford is unlikely to agree to a permanent move, as he prioritizes playing at the highest European level.

Barcelona has emerged as Rashford’s preferred destination. The forward is reportedly willing to accept a reduced salary to facilitate a move to the Catalan club, although Barcelona’s financial issues complicate any potential transfer.

Manchester United are open to letting Rashford leave permanently, with manager Ruben Amorim having sanctioned his exit after a breakdown in their relationship.

United are already considering replacements, with Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze among their targets.

Rashford’s permanent move to Aston Villa is now in serious doubt due to Villa’s uncertain Champions League qualification and the financial demands involved. The player’s desire for Champions League football and interest from Barcelona further complicate the situation. Unless Villa secure a top-four finish and Rashford accepts a wage cut, a permanent transfer to Villa Park appears unlikely, with a move abroad-particularly to Barcelona-now the more probable outcome.
