Andre Onana shocked by wage cut

Andre Onana has been left “shocked” by a wage reduction at Manchester United this season, a consequence of the club failing to qualify for the Champions League, which triggered a 25% salary cut for all players. The 29-year-old goalkeeper, who joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 for £43.8 million, has struggled significantly, making nine errors leading to goals since the start of the 2023-24 season—more than any other Premier League goalkeeper in that period.

Onana’s poor form culminated in two costly mistakes during the Europa League quarter-final first leg against Lyon, contributing to a 2-2 draw. Following this, he was dropped from the squad for the subsequent heavy 4-1 defeat to Newcastle, with manager Ruben Amorim advising him to “disconnect” temporarily to regain confidence. Despite this, Onana is expected to return for the Europa League second leg.

Financially, Manchester United face a dilemma. Onana’s transfer fee is amortized over his five-year contract, leaving a book value of around £26 million. Selling him for less than this would result in an accounting loss, which the club cannot afford given its precarious financial situation. Consequently, United is unlikely to sell Onana below this threshold, making a permanent transfer difficult unless a club meets the steep asking price. A loan move or retention at the club are the most probable outcomes for the summer.

Off the pitch, Onana has had tense moments, including a public spat with former United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who labeled him “one of the worst goalkeepers” in the club’s history. Onana responded by highlighting his trophy wins with the club, but his recent performances have done little to quell criticism.

Interest from the Saudi Pro League remains, as clubs there have shown willingness to sign Onana since his time at Inter Milan. However, whether they can meet United’s financial demands is uncertain. Meanwhile, United is reportedly considering Aaron Ramsdale as a potential replacement, though he prefers to stay in the Premier League.

In summary, Onana’s season has been marked by poor performances, a surprising wage cut, and a complicated transfer situation. Manchester United’s financial constraints mean they cannot easily offload him without incurring losses, leaving his future at Old Trafford uncertain but likely to involve either staying or a loan move in the near term.
