Former Tottenham Hotspur star Gareth Bale is still in a stand-off with La Liga giants Real Madrid and news have emerged that Real Madrid turned down a €100m offer last summer from an unnamed Premier League club for former the winger, former Los Blancos president Ramon Calderon has claimed.
Bale’s future lies in the balance at the Santiago Bernabeu and has been uncertain for a considerable amount of time, and in his latest interview, he retaliated against Madrid for making it “very difficult” for him to leave the club.
The 31-year-old made a move back to Real back in the summer of 2013, successfully winning two La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, one Spanish Super Cup, four Champions Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups and three FIFA Club World Cups.
The Wales international had featured 146 times in the Premier League for Spurs over a six-year period at White Hart Lane, scoring 42 times and has been frequently linked with a return to North London amid news of apparent interest in him from current Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho.
Calderon, the former president of the 13-time Champions League winners, has claimed Madrid turned down a big-money offer from a Premier League side for Bale’s services last summer, telling talkSPORT, via the Daily Mirror:
“I know in the last day of the transfer window last year, there was an offer from the Premier League.
“They offered €100m and Real Madrid turned down that offer because they thought Bale would be a player in their side.
“I’m not allowed to say the name, though I do know the name of the club. I think at the end there was a disagreement as Madrid decided not to sell the player, because they thought he was a player who could be used and be in the starting line-up.”
Manchester United have been linked with Bale in the past, and there have even been rumours of a possible reunion in north London for the former Spurs star.
