Manchester United stage dramatic comeback to eliminate Lyon in Europa League thriller

Manchester United reached the Europa League semi-finals after a breathtaking 5-4 extra-time victory over Lyon at Old Trafford, progressing 7-6 on aggregate in a match packed with drama and late heroics.

United appeared in control after first-half goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot gave them a 2-0 lead. However, Lyon turned the tie on its head with two quick goals from Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico, leveling the match and setting up a tense finish. Lyon’s momentum was checked when Tolisso received a second yellow card in the 89th minute, leaving the visitors with ten men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Lyon surged ahead in extra time through a brilliant strike by Rayan Cherki and a penalty from Alexandre Lacazette, making it 4-2 with just minutes remaining. United’s hopes of European football next season were hanging by a thread.

But in a stunning late turnaround, Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty, Kobbie Mainoo scored to level the tie, and Harry Maguire headed home the winner in the dying moments, completing one of the most remarkable comebacks in the club’s history. United will now face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals, keeping their European dreams alive.
