Gary Neville has offered a blunt reaction to the news regarding Ed Woodward’s resignation on Tuesday evening as executive vice-chairman at Manchester United as the plans for a European Super League crumbled before the latter’s eyes.
Woodward will depart at the end of the season after it became clear that his plans to take the club into a European Super League were falling apart, at least for now.
As the ongoing drama unfolded on Tuesday, following protests and widespread condemnation of the plans for the new league, Chelsea dn Manchester City are believed to have stated their intention to withdraw.
And it is now looking as if the proposed new league is in imminent collapse in what is being seen as a huge win for football supporters at the expense of greed-inspired top-flight club owners.
Neville is one of the most high-profile figures to publicly condemn the scheme, and has also been known for his high disregard for Woodward in the past.
And following news of Old Trafford’s executive vice chairman’s impending departure, Neville simply tweeted an emoji of a waving hand to bid adieu to the immensely unpopular 49-year-old.
And, rubbing salt into the wound, he also posted a picture of himself drinking red wine along with the caption: “To The Super League.”
Although Woodward was not given a specific role in the European Super League, he is nonetheless believed to have played a key role leading to the build up to its official announcement on Sunday.
United sources were keen to stress to Mirror Football that Woodward’s decision to resign as executive vice chairman was not in any way linked to the European Super League and that he had indeed been planning to exit in the summer all along.
Woodward has been associated with Old Trafford since 2005, when he advised Malcolm Glazer on the takeover of the club and was named executive vice-chairman in 2012. However, he was in no way popular with the fans and faced constant criticism over his dealings in the transfer market.
It is not clear yet what his next move will be, but his departure is likely to be celebrated by the majority of Red Devils supporters.
