Guardiola rebukes Manchester United supporters for offensive chants targeting player’s mother

Pep Guardiola has issued a strong rebuke for Manchester United supporters for offensive chants targeting Phil Foden’s mother during Sunday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford. The match ended in a goalless draw, but the behavior of certain fans overshadowed the result.

Guardiola condemned the chants, describing them as a “lack of class” and calling on those responsible to feel ashamed. He emphasized that the issue extends beyond Manchester United, reflecting a broader problem in football culture globally. “It’s not United; it’s the people,” Guardiola stated: “We are so exposed in world football—managers, owners, and players especially. Honestly, I don’t understand the mindset of people involving Phil’s mum in such chants. It’s a lack of integrity and class.”

Manchester City expressed disgust at the widespread participation in these chants by sections of United fans during the match. United sources also reiterated their stance against abusive behavior directed at players.

Phil Foden, a 24-year-old England international from Stockport, played 58 minutes before being substituted. He struggled to make an impact in what has been a challenging season for him, marked by a 13-game goal drought and inconsistent performances following his stellar campaign last year as England’s Player of the Year.

Despite Foden’s struggles, Guardiola defended his player, praising his passion and attitude during training sessions. “His impact was incredible, and he will be back,” Guardiola said.

The derby result left Manchester City outside the Premier League’s top four and United languishing in 13th place. Guardiola acknowledged his team’s inability to capitalize on their opportunities but remained focused on moving forward after securing a point at Old Trafford.
