[VIDEO] Eredivisie likely to be cancelled

The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has confirmed that the current season will be almost likely abandoned.

Netherlands prime minister Mark Rutte on Tuesday has banned events including professional sports and music festivals until 1 September to prevent a resurgence of COVID-19.

“Based on the government’s decision, the KNVB will consult with Uefa, after which the decision will be taken,” the KNVB statement said.

“The KNVB has not yet definitively cancelled competitions because of financial difficulties in the football industry due to the coronavirus crisis.”

KNVB however, will be consulting UEFA before making a final decision.

UEFA wants all European leagues to complete their season.

But the governing body said some European leagues could be cancelled “in special cases” because of the pandemic.

Eredivisie clubs will also meet on Friday “to discuss the consequences” of the decision, while training grounds will reopen “under strict conditions” so that players can resume training.

Ajax and AZ Alkmaar are leading the table level on points after 26 games, with Ajax ahead on goal difference.
