Manchester City’s Viking football sensation Erling Haaland grabbed another two goals as the Cityzens began their pre-season schedule with a 5-3 win.
City serial award-winning boss Pep Guardiola believes Haaland is fitter now than he was at the same stage of pre-season a year ago, following his clinical brace against their Japanese sister club Yokohama Marinos to win 5-3 on Sunday with just three touches of the ball. Which should not be surprising anymore considering the scoring prowess and flair of the young football wizard.
The Norwegian striker already has more goals than he bagged across the first three matches of last summer, when he scored the winner vs Bayern Munich but failed to net against Club America or Liverpool in the Community Shield.
Haaland broke the Premier League scoring record with 36 goals last season, netting 52 across all competitions as part of an incredible debut season in England.
Despite that, he had actually only scored one goal in his previous eight appearances heading into pre-season, but looked back to his best with two well-taken goals in Tokyo.
Speaking after the win against Yokohama Marinos, Guardiola was asked for his verdict on Haaland and how good he could be again next season.
“Comparing last season, that period. He is fitter, much better, than last season when he arrived,” he said. “I know we would love to be like last season. He looks good, but he is still a way from the best condition, like everyone.
“So, most important for him was to score two goals in the first game, because last season in the last games, he could not score. Important is the rhythm, the principles, we are working with all the time. We know exactly what he has to do; we know him, and in a few weeks we will be better condition than now.”
