Jurgen Klopp has always been so confident throughout his life, especially during his time with Liverpool.
But even a manager who lead the team to win the Champions League and on the runaway to the Premier League title this season, was afraid of getting fired if he couldn’t live up to expectation.
When the German joined Liverpool, he had to convince the board and owner to give him more time to rebuild the squad.
“It was clear we cannot fix it overnight. Everyone wanted that but we couldn’t so I had to ask for time, I knew,” Klopp said on Sky Sports’ Football Show.
“Before that in my career I never got the sack so I had no experience with that, but I knew then it was a different level, and if I can’t deliver here quick enough, then I will get the sack.”
Klopp rose to prominence after leading Borussia Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and reached the Champions League final in 2013. He left the club after finishing only seventh two years later.
In his first season at Anfield, Liverpool could only only finished fourth. The second season, Liverpool reached League Cup and Europa League final but ended up losing in both occasions.
Liverpool reached the Champions League final in 2018 for the first time since 2007 but Klopp failed to win his first trophy with the club.
It all changed when Liverpool were on incredible run in the 2018-2019 season as they beat Barcelona and Spurs, winning their sixth Champions League trophy, the first trophy under Jurgen Klopp.
“We got that time and the nice thing is that after six, seven, eight games, they were really positive about the situation, they realised we were on the right path. From that moment they didn’t question it one second,” Klopp said.
“They were full of faith and trust, and they said the path we will stay on, and everything will be fine. That’s what we did then.
“When we lost finals against Sevilla, Man City or Real Madrid, I think pundits say ‘if he doesn’t win the next one then they might change’. But internally it was never somebody thinking like this.”
