Unai Emery issues confident statement ahead of second leg after Aston Villa’s defeat to PSG

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured a commanding 3-1 victory over Aston Villa in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal matchup at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday. Despite Aston Villa initially taking the lead, PSG demonstrated their strength with three unanswered goals to finish the night on top.

Aston Villa made an early statement when they took the lead, showing some promising dynamic play. However, PSG’s Desire Doue quickly responded with an equalizer, ensuring the teams went into halftime tied 1-1.

In the second half, PSG began to dominate, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia netting the go-ahead goal to make it 2-1. Just when it seemed the match might end with a narrow scoreline, Nuno Mendes doubled PSG’s lead with a late strike, securing a comfortable 3-1 advantage heading into the second leg.

Despite the loss, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery remains optimistic about his team’s chances as they prepare for the crucial second leg at Villa Park. Speaking to TNT Sports post-match, Emery expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to turn the tide in front of their home supporters.

“More or less, the result was what I expected – 2-1 or 3-1,” Emery said (via BBC). “Next week, playing at home will be a huge challenge for us, but we’ll feel strong at Villa Park with our fans behind us.”

The Spaniard also assessed his team’s performance, stating:

“Today, we needed to be disciplined defensively. Even when we were trailing 2-1, we had three good approaches inside their box. Overall, we’re close to being at the level required for a result. That last goal we conceded, we have to accept it. Our mindset doesn’t change – we need to win at home by more than one goal.”

Aston Villa faces a daunting task as PSG brings their momentum to England for the second leg. Emery’s confidence and belief in the team’s ability to rally at home could be crucial in overcoming the two-goal deficit and keeping their Champions League hopes alive.

With Villa Park set to host what promises to be an electrifying encounter, all eyes are now on whether the Premier League side can pull off a remarkable comeback against the French giants.
