Apart from Xabi Alonso, Liverpool have had their eyes also on their other prime managerial target Ruben Amorim, but the latter has reportedly held talks with West Ham, who seem to be purpotedly lining up the Sporting Lisbon coach as a potential David Moyes replacement.
West Ham have suddenly emerged as shock contenders to entice Liverpool managerial target Ruben Amorim after reportedly having held talks with the in-demand 39-year-old, with the Sporting Lisbon coach being the favorite to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield following Xabi Alonso’s decision to remain at Bayer Leverkusen.
However, according to The Athletic, a move to Anfield is now looking most “unlikely”, as apparently a move to West Ham, although appealing to Amorim, is only one among various other options the Portugal national has at his disposal come the summer.
David Moyes is expected to leave the club as he will be out of contract at the end of the season and Amorim is positioned at the top of the club’s wish-list, although they’re also casting a serious look at former Real Madrid and Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui.
Amorim’s chatting with West Ham will no doubt come as a shock to Liverpool, as Klopp had announced back in January that he was leaving Anfield at the end of the season. That immediately prompted the Reds to quickly draw up a list of targets with Bayern Leverkusen boss Alonso as the prime target but he has decided to stay after an stellar season in Germany, wresting the Bundesliga title from the grasps of Bayern Munich. Liverpool then had no choice but to cast their attention on Amorim, but that deal now also appears to be off the table.
The likes of Julian Nagelsmann, Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Tuchel have also been Liverpool have also been linked with Liverpool.
Amorim took over the Sporting role in 2020, having managed rivals Braga for one season after winning the Portuguese Cup. He won the league in his first season with Sporting as well as the cup for the second time in his career.
