Mason Greenwood has not been even a piece of the Man United jigsaw puzzle since January 2022 and is even now not a part of Manchester United’s return to pre-season training. Despite reports that Erik ten Tag is “open” to having him back, the 21-year-old has been freezing his posterior out in the cold.
He was suspended by the club after allegations of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behavior surfaced. Although the charges were dropped in February, Greenwood has been left with no recourse but to work by himself away from the rest of the first-team squad at Old Trafford while an internal investigation is still being carried out.
A big call on his future is expected to be made by end July as a final decision is said to be close ahead of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign. Greenwood has yet to be absorbed back into United’s plans, with senior stars already returning from their summer breaks in anticipation and preparation for the new season.
The one-cap Three Lions star has allegedly attracted interest from Turkey and Italy with murmurings of loan moves, while former Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho is among those said to be keen on the player. Greenwood’s contract runs till 2025 and was included on United’s retained list at the end of the 2022-23 season.
Ten Hag is reportedly “open to having Greenwood in his squad at some stage”, although there are divided opinions inside the Red Devils camp, according to The Athletic. Chief executive Richard Arnold, co-owner Joel Glazer and the rest of United’s board are expected to make the final decision on Greenwood’s case and determine whether there is any future for him with the club.
