After losing Bournemouth certainly put up a humdinger of a show to get some sweet payback on Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday after having been brutally humiliated 9-0 by the Reds earlier this season.
Bournemouth somehow found the right gear to halt Jurgen Klopp’s side’s recent momentum and bring it to a standstill with a 1-0 home win to boost its hopes of staving off relegation whilst unexpectedly dealing a blow to the visitors’ hopes of earning a top-four spot.
The only goal of the day was scored by Philip Billing in the 28th minute after being teed up in the box by Dango Ouattara and the home team managed to defuse a Liverpool attack that had looked imminently threatening when the latter pulled off a stunning 7-0 win over Manchester United last weekend.
Anfield’s latest top Liverpool scorer Mohamed Salah missed a penalty for his team in the 70th, as his effort sailed wide of the goal, while Virgil van Dijk had an early header cleared off the line. On the whole the Reds put up a surprisingly limpid display that had just a match prior to this looked like it was hopefully getting back to its best after four wins and a draw in its last five games.
Bournemouth, on the other hand, began the day as the lowest bottom dweller but the win lifted it provisionally up to 16th in the tight relegation battle, with the team coming off a tight 3-2 loss to league leader Arsenal last weekend.
This was Bournemouth’s only second league win their its last 10 games – which really says a lot about the Reds’ devastatingly inconsistent form after their 7-0 dismantling of bitter rivals Manchester United earlier.
