Harry Maguire told he can walk

Defender and former skipper Harry Maguire has been told by Manchester United that he can leave Old Trafford amid the Three Lions’ player’s recent links to Wolves.

The center-back has been ostensibly struggling for starts this season under manager Erik ten Hag, with the England international reduced to playing second fiddle to the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane at Old Trafford.

Maguire has been struggling to be a regular in the starting XI and has failed to convince Ten Hag of his merits as both a captain and a defender.

Last season he was plagued with a string of abysmal performances at the back for United and it wasn’t long before Ten Hag stepped in and decided that United present a much stronger case in defence with Martinez and Varane.

There were also occasions this season when Luke Shaw was also used at center-back, clearly an omen that the writing was already on the wall for Maguire.

The latest news with regards to the defender is journalist Ben Jacobs’ report that Wolves could be one of the keen parties in the mix for Maguire this summer.

He said: “I think Wolves could be one to watch as well even though they tend to buy a little bit younger. And the reason for that is because Max Kilman is going to be in demand over the summer period.”

As for Old Trafford, they have reported today itself that United have now told Maguire he is free to depart the club as they are willing to sell him, despite knowing they will have to take a huge hit on the £80 million they bought him from Leicester City for.

The understanding is that United would prefer an outright sale but are also open to loaning Maguire out if that could lead to a permanent deal.

Newcastle United have also been mentioned as being keen to sign the defender.
