Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has thrown doubt over his future at Old Trafford after admitting nobody has spoken to him about a new contract as his current terms expire at the end of next season.
Solskjaer signed a three-year contract after taking over on a permanent basis in May 2019, which came about after taking charge initially on an interim basis following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho back in late 2018.
After some years in the wilderness since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, the Red Devils are now in the midst of one of their best Premier League seasons in years with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking to push Manchester City all the way for the title.
They sit second in the table behind Manchester City while earlier in the season, the Red Devils were sent crashing out of the Champions League at the group stage. However, this campaign has been a rollercoaster for the Norwegian, who has battled back from talk over a crisis to moving United to the top of the Premier League.
The attention has now turned to Solskjaer’s contract, which expires in the summer of 2022, with the Old Trafford boss admitting there have been no approaches over a renewal.
He told VG when asked about the situation: “I have not thought about that, and we have not discussed it at all.
“I am just focusing on doing my job and, as you say, part of the job is to stabilize things.
“We have a job to do in order to find consistency on the pitch. Outside the pitch it is still a crisis if you lose a game.
“If you concede a goal in stoppage time against Everton, it still creates big headlines. That can happen in football.
“But on the inside it is more stable. We feel like we are on our way towards what we sat down and discussed, what we planned.”
Solskjaer had made an admission late in January that he was thankful to his superiors for standing by him during tough periods.
He said: “I’ve said it many a time we looked at the squad, looked at situation we were in, we put a longer term plan in place.
“We knew there would be some patchy periods and that we would have to stay strong mentally.
“The leadership they have shown has been very strong and steady and I’m very grateful for the communication that has been open and honest all of the time.”
