Having been previously linked with Real Madrid’s prodigal star now stuck in limbo, Marca now claims the Red Devils have rekindled their interest in 31-year-old Gareth Bale.
The Welsh international fell out of favour at the Spanish capital and has not played first-team football under Zinedine Zidane since the restart of the football season, with Bale having drawn flack for his antics off the pitch and his commitment to the club being seriously questioned.
It has also been stated that Bale is set for showdown talks with Real boss Zinedine Zidane to discuss his future, with the La Liga giants hoping United will come up with the cash to end the Bale saga once and for all.
Former Real Madrid president Ramos had made a disclosure to Talksport, confirming that last summer the club received an £89m bid for Bale from an unnamed Premier League side.
“I know on the last day of the transfer window last year there was an offer from the Premier League.
“They offered €100m [£89m] and Real Madrid turned down that offer because they thought Bale would be a player in their side”.
He added: “I’m not allowed to say the name, though I do know the name of the club.
With the Welsh international’s future at Madrid seemingly beyond redemption, it may be the best time for the winger to return to English shores, especially in view of the fact that Manchester United’s pursuit of prime target Jadon Sancho has been stalled, besides the club’s bid for Juventus winger Douglas Costa rejected.
Man United are facing competition from rivals Tottenham for Bale’s signature as former United manager Jose Mourinho is about to undertake the new season at Tottenham with Bale headlining it. However according to Daily Mail, Tottenham’s challenge for the Welshman is not significant as club chairman Daniel Levy has no money.
United will have to come up to a fee close to £89million for the winger while his wages can also prove to be another major stumbling block.
The Red Devils tried to sign Bale before his switch to Real Madrid and now it would be worth watching to see whether this move becomes a reality.
