No one expect Atletico Madrid to lose 2-1 to third division outfit, Cultural Leonessa. Not even their manager Diego Simeone.
Atletico took more than 60 minutes to score the first goal through Angel Correa, but they were stunned by Julen Castaneda who scored the equaliser in 83 minutes.
Atletico were dragged into the extra time, and they conceded again through Sergio Benito Crujera in 108 minutes, as they unable to find equaliser before the game ends.
Simeone however, was determined that his side could recover and that this defeat would not have a substantial impact on his players.
“I have the desire to work like every day since I arrived, the penalties or the extra time in the Champions League didn’t change me, nor will going out in this round,” Simeone said to Marca.
“I have an important squad and results will come soon.”When looking to analyse the defeat, the coach took the blame but it was clear where the problem lies with his team.”We didn’t have the decisiveness we needed to have, Vitolo had chances, Saul with a header, Thomas… We had a few.”
“We had playing situations and goal chances, their goalkeeper had a fantastic night, the rival team played a great game and had ambition and hope.”We couldn’t score and the responsibility is absolutely mine.
“We couldn’t be clinical in front of goal, that’s football and when you can’t score, everything is more difficult.”
It is their third defeat in a row after losing to Eibar in the league on Saturday and 4-1 defeat on penalties to Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.
