Man United greats pay respects to ‘The King’, Denis Law

Manchester United legends past and present gathered to pay their respects to the iconic Denis Law, known as “The King,” during his funeral on Tuesday.

The service at Manchester Cathedral was attended by players like Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire, alongside manager Ruben Amorim. They were joined by former greats such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Gary Neville, and Peter Schmeichel.

Law’s legacy is deeply intertwined with Manchester United’s history. Over 11 years with the club, he made 404 appearances and scored 237 goals, placing him third in United’s all-time scoring list behind Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney. His career highlights include winning two league titles and the European Cup in 1968 under Sir Matt Busby—a first for an English club.

Before proceeding to Manchester Cathedral for the service, the funeral procession began at Old Trafford Stadium. Thousands of fans lined up outside to pay their respects as it passed by the Trinity Statue commemorating Law alongside George Best and Bobby Charlton. The procession featured a Scottish flag in honor of Law’s heritage.

Peter Schmeichel praised Law not only as a player but also as a person: “What a man… What a player first and foremost for this city… But what a person he was.”

Brian Kidd highlighted his humility: “His humility and empathy toward people was superb… just such a lovely person.”

Law started his career at Huddersfield Town before stints with Manchester City (briefly) and Torino. He remains Scotland’s only Ballon d’Or winner after receiving the award in 1964.

After retiring from football, he worked extensively in broadcasting until his passing last month due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.
