Bruno Fernandes has delivered a harsh verdict on Manchester United’s disastrous season, insisting that even winning the Europa League “will not save anything”. Despite the club’s bleak 14th-place standing in the Premier League, United still have a chance to qualify for next season’s Champions League by winning the Europa League, with a semi-final clash against Athletic Bilbao ahead.
Fernandes emphasized that while securing silverware in the Europa League is important, it cannot mask the failures of the campaign. He stated ahead of the first leg: “I wouldn’t say it’s a reward, I think it will just be successful in terms of the Europa League. It’s very important to do that, to get the silverware this season. But it won’t save anything.”
Athletic Bilbao, who will host the final at their San Mamés stadium if they progress, pose a formidable challenge. Fernandes acknowledged the difficulty, saying, “They have the final at home if they beat us, so it will be really tough. You have to be prepared.”
United’s league form has been abysmal, with manager Ruben Amorim describing this squad as the worst in the club’s history. Fernandes has been a rare bright spot, contributing 15 goals and 14 assists this season, yet even his efforts have not been enough to lift the team’s overall performance.
Financially, qualifying for the Champions League is crucial for United to boost revenue, improve their transfer market position, and comply with profit and sustainability regulations. The club is already planning for next season, targeting Wolves striker Matheus Cunha, whose £62.5 million release clause they must activate. However, former United player Paul Scholes has expressed doubts about Cunha’s fit in the current squad, citing concerns over the team’s overall quality and playing style.
United’s first leg against Bilbao is scheduled for Thursday away from home, with the outcome likely to define the club’s immediate future.
In summary, Fernandes’ candid remarks reflect the deep dissatisfaction within the club: while Europa League success could provide a silver lining, it cannot erase the damage of a season marked by poor league performance and uncertainty about the squad’s direction.
