Ruben Amorim has no qualms leaving Manchester United without compensation if not wanted

Ruben Amorim has declared he will walk away from Manchester United without demanding a pay-off if the club’s board decides his time as manager is up. The announcement comes after United’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham in Bilbao, which capped off a dismal season for the Red Devils—their worst in the Premier League era.

Despite hopes that a European triumph might salvage something from the campaign, United fell short, losing 1-0 to a scrappy Brennan Johnson goal. The result leaves Amorim’s future in doubt, though he remains adamant that he is the right person to lead the club through its current crisis—if given the chance.

“I have nothing to show to the fans, so at this moment it’s a little bit of faith,” Amorim told reporters. “Let’s see. I’m always open. If the board and the fans feel I’m not the right guy, I will go the next day, without any conversation about compensation. But I will not quit. I’m really confident in my job and, as you can see, I will not change anything in the way I do things.”

Amorim, who has two years left on his contract, was appointed in November but has overseen just six Premier League wins in six months. United’s struggles have left them 27 points adrift of the Champions League places, and the financial implications of missing out on Europe are severe—potentially affecting their ability to attract top talent this summer.

Reflecting on the final, Amorim said: “It was clear we were the better team, but we managed not to score again. The guys tried everything to win the game and I think we were better than the opponent.” He also acknowledged the pain of the club’s supporters, admitting, “I can only share in the sorrow of our fans; they truly deserve more.”

United defender Luke Shaw admitted the season had been unacceptable: “It’s hard to put into words, but for a club like Manchester United, it’s not really good enough. All of us have to question ourselves tonight. Are we good enough to be here? Because this club, this season, it’s not acceptable.”

As United face a summer of soul-searching, Amorim’s future remains uncertain—but he has made it clear he will leave with dignity if the club decides to move on.
