Tottenham inflicts defeat over nine-man Liverpool thanks to last gasp Joel Matip own-goal

Tottenham have finally emerged victorious as they inflicted a last minute 2-1 defeat on nine-man Liverpool to round off a topsy-turvy evening in north London when final minute of stoppage time saw a disoriented Joel Matip ricochetting the ball into his own net in to seal victory for Spurs.

Spurs had gone 1-0 up through Heung-min Son, with Liverpool going helter-skelter after going a man down when Jones had been issued a red card.

Liverpool fans were left fuming again when Luis Diaz’s goal was ruled out for offside earlier in the game, despite images appearing to show the winger being onside.

The Reds persevered valiantly and managed to get themselves back in the game as Cody Gakpo equalised after slamming a powerful shot past Guglielmo Vicario.

Substitute Jota then was issued a yellow card in the second half after referee Simon Hooper believed he stuck his leg out to trip Destiny Udogie from behind. The visitors were enraged by the decision as it had looked like Udogie had gone down despite Jota not making any contact with him.

Then, only a minute later, things went from bad to worse as Jota lunged out to stop Udogie again to make up for lost possession, but ended up totally missing the ball and catching the player instead.

Hooper immediately flashed a second yellow to send the Portugal international off despite Jota’s protests. The sending off of Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota had seen the Reds reduced to nine men.

Ange Postecoglou’s side assailed the Reds’ goal every oppoturnity they had but looked as if their valiant efforts were fruitless despite the visitors being left with only nine players.

However, in the sixth minute of added time, a nonplussed Joel Matip turned the ball into his own net, putting a dismal end to a torrid day for the hapless Reds.

Tottenham now sit second in the league, only one point behind Man City, whilst Liverpool missed out on the chance to go top of the league to remain in fourth.
