Kylian Mbappe was earlier expected to have an outstanding summer and have himself firmly lodged in the conversation topic of being the best player in the world now, but the impish elves and goblins of football-land wreaked havoc with the France national team and the PSG star actually ended up as the much-besmirched villain after missing the vital penalty against Switzerland.
Understandably this would be but a slightly awkward glitch in his resume, but his PSG future has nonetheless been under question for a while now.
The Parc des Princes outfit missed out on the Ligue 1 title last season besides falling short again in the Champions League, and major efforts were accordingly made in the transfer market with Sergio Ramos, Gini Wijnaldum and Achraf Hakimi all signing as the latest reinforcements to boost the team.
Unfortunately it doesn’t look now as if those arrivals are sufficient to motivate the World Cup winner to stay, and the latest reports from Spain say he’s decided he’s going to play for Real Madrid:
It’s still a gray area whether Real Madrid could afford to sign him this summer but, with his contract running out in the summer of 2022, he would be available on a free transfer, which means he could well be on his way to the Bernabeu at some point soon.
Obviously PSG are in no way strapped for cash, they may still decide it’s more useful to keep him around and gun seriously for Champions League honors, but it would understandably be a huge blow to lose him on a free.
The Los Blancos have a squad that’s on the wrong side of the age scale and could do with a true young megastar to build their fortifications around and Mbappe does fit the bill, should the move actually come through some day soon.
