Although one of the dark horses in the 2019/20 Premier League campaign, boss Chris Wilder unerringly guided the Blades to a very impressive 9th place finish, ending the campaign just five points off 6th – and this on a shoestring budget, nonetheless.
Unsurprisingly, fans of the Yorkshire outfit probably weren’t expecting such a sensational season this time around, and of course neither did they also likely expect Sheffield United to suddenly go through such a sudden downturn this bad.
With 28 games of the PL season done and dusted, Sheffield United are sat dead bottom of the English top-flight, a full 12 points away from safety, having also won just four games all season and are by far the lowest scorers in the league, finding the net just 16 times in 28 outings.
Now, with 10 games of the season left on the charts, it looks like Chris Wilder’s time at the club is up as, according to The Times, the Englishman is set to be sacked by Sheffield United today.
It is added that Wilder is understood to be meeting with the club’s hierarchy today to agree the terms of his departure and alhough Wilder can’t really complain if he is indeed gets the sack, it would surely give rise to some questions if he does indeed part ways with the club.
As already outlined, Sheffield United have been staring relegation in the face for some time now. So, if the club hierarchy really wanted Wilder removed, why wait when they could have done it a few months back when a new manager may have still had the chance of turning things around?
Regardless of whoever comes in now to replace Wilder, Sheffield United are set for a return to the Championship and once they get there, it’s highly likely they would miss having the experience of someone like Wilder, who knows how to get out of the league, at the helm.
