Robin Quaison may not be a striker that is as glamorous as Erling Haaland or Robert Lewandowski, but the Swedish forward has proved himself to be a prolific goalscorer in Bundesliga this season, scoring 12 goals for FSV Mainz.
Despite that, the 26-year-old admitted that it is difficult to rediscover his form after two months without football.
“The first three weeks when we were home we were just running and it’s not the same and when we finally started to train, we could not have contact, we could not play any games, we just did passing, shooting and in the beginning it was fun, to see the guys and touch a ball, but after a while that even got a little bit boring, I’m not going to lie.
“I think mentally it will be tough, I think that’s the hardest thing at the moment, to play without fans. You know, we haven’t played games in eight weeks, so it will be hard. It will be difficult, but I think all players look forward to this so much, so I think it will be very good.”
When Quaison signed a professional contract with Swedish club, AIK in 2011, he has never scored more than 10 goals in a single season. The highest record was 5 goals and he only scored one goal in his final season with the club.
When he joined Serie A club, Palermo in 2014, it was even worse. He could only scored 2 goals in his first two seasons and only scored 4 goals in his final season.
Even after joining Mainz in 2017, his record didn’t seem to improve either as he scored once in his first season and 4 goals in his second season.
All that changed when he scored nine goals last season and this season he scored 12 goals, including his first ever hat-trick in his career against Werder Bremen in December.
“I’ve been working a lot outside the pitch, analyzing myself and trying to get into positions where it is easier to score and so far it has worked.
“But I need to keep on working, because I want to score more.”
“Hopefully, I will play and I’ll do my best to get in shape as soon as possible and start to score goals again, that’s my goal – to pick up where I left off.”
