Liverpool have reportedly reached an agreement with Mohamed Salah over a new contract, after much speculation had been swirling regarding the future of the winger, whose current deal is set to expire at the end of June. Salah is now on the brink of signing a new two-year contract to remain at Anfield, according to The Mirror.
Salah’s agent Rammy Abbas had expressedly told Liverpool that he wanted a three-year contract for his client, with Fenway Sports Group having initially only been prepared to offer him a one-year extension. However, a compromise has now been brokered, with the 32-year-old set to prolong his stay at the club who he has represented since 2017.
Earning around £400,000-a-week at Liverpool, money has not been an issue with regards to him deciding his future. Liverpool are also looking to tie down Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold to new deals, with both players also in the final year of their current contracts.
Salah is still undoubtedly very much a player of key importance for Liverpool, attested to by the fact that he has scored 13 goals and provided eight assists in 14 Premier League games this season. In total, the Egyptian star has scored 226 goals in 370 appearances for Liverpool, having helped the club win the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup and two League Cups during his time at the club. The positive news regarding Salah will be a huge boost for Arne Slot, whose side are currently top of the Premier League.
Salah did not attempt to conceal his disappointment last month at not having been offered a new deal by Liverpool yet at that stage. Speaking to a small selection of reporters after Liverpool’s win at Southampton, the Egyptian ace said: ‘We are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay in the club. I’m probably more out than in.
‘You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands. As I said, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future.
‘I love the fans. The fans love me. In the end it is not in my hands or the fans’ hands.’
When asked if he was disappointed about the lack of progress, the ace winger added: ‘Of course, yeah. I’m not going to retire soon so I’m just playing, focusing on the season and I’m trying to win the Premier League and hopefully the Champions League as well. I’m disappointed but we will see.’
