Newcastle United could ink a deal for Nottingham Forest reserve goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos as part of the deal that will take Elliot Anderson to the City Ground.
The Magpies have agreed a £35m deal with Forest for Anderson, who is being sold to ensure Newcastle remain in line with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations.
This evening itself marks the accountancy deadline for PSR calculations, with the sale of both Anderson and Yankuba Minteh will ensure Newcastle do not face a points penalty next season.
Suggestions have been afloat that Newcastle could look to sign either Anthony Elanga or Morgan Gibbs-White as part of the deal that would see Anderson ending up in Forest, with neither player heading to Tyneside. However Newcastle are understood to be mooting the possibility of adding Vlachodimos to their goalkeeping ranks, after the 30-year-old Greece international joined Forest from Benfica last September in a deal that reportedly involved an initial fee of €4.9m, which could rise to around €9.3m with add-ons included.
Vlachodimos’ Premier League debut against Aston Villa was in last November, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 win, but only made a further four top-flight appearances in the remainder of the campaign as former Newcastle goalkeeper Matz Sels established himself as Nuno Espirito Santo’s preferred number one.
Newcastle’s goalkeeping department has been shaky all summer, with Martin Dubravka expected to leave after entering the final year of his contract. Loris Karius was released as a free agent at the end of last season.
The Magpies initiated talks with Valencia over Georgia international Giorgi Mamardashvili, but switched their attention to Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford when the deal could not be brokered.
