Tottenham will ‘destroy another proven winner’ as they eye Zinedine Zidane

Disgruntled Tottenham fans believe Zinedine Zidane would be making a horrendous mistake should he join Tottenham given the club’s alarming track record of hiring managers who are ‘proven winners’.

Fans who have already had enough of the Tottenham ailment are convinced the club will ‘destroy’ the Frenchman if he joins them this summer.

The London club have begun the search for yet another manager following the less than harmonious departure of Antonio Conte on Sunday, and Zidane is now rumored to be dead smack in their crosshairs.

Despite having coached only at Real Madrid, Zidane is still undoubtedly one of the most decorated coaches in Europe having won 11 major honors, including three Champions Leagues, across two spells with Real Madrid, but Spurs fans think hiring a ‘proven winner’ like the French maestro would be futile given how poorly both Conte and Jose Mourinho fared during their tenures with the club.

“Perfect. We can destroy another proven winner,” one fan grumbled on Twitter, while another wrote: “Kiss goodbye to your reputation Zinedine if you fancy the Tottenham job.”

Another fan is sure the move would be an “unmitigated disaster”, commenting: “He’s only coached Real Madrid, with one of the best squads ever assembled. He’d crash and burn with us. Absolutely to be avoided, I hope.”

Another opined: “No thank you. We don’t need a ‘name’ for the short term but a manager who genuinely wants to be here and ready to stay for the long run.”

Surprisingly, even rival fans showed similarly pessimistic sentiments about Zidane’s chances of being a success at Tottenham, with one tweeting: “Zidane should avoid Spurs like the plague. You go there and your reputation is ruined.”

Another quipped “Tottenham are the weakest of the top six and will soon be overtaken by Newcastle, even Guardiola would struggle to win things there. Zidane would be mad to take the job.”

As yet it remains to be seen whether Zidane is interested in the job or not but if he is, he’ll be stacked against the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Julian Nagelsmann for the club’s vote.

The 1998 Ballon d’Or winner has coached only at Real Madrid, having spent a year-and-a-half as manager of their reserve side before being promoted to first team head coach in January 2016.

However there’s no denying his efficacy as a coach as he led the team to Champions League glory just a few months into his reign, and won the competition twice more in the next two seasons before stepping down in 2018. Definitely no flukes there nor a flash in the pan, for sure.

He returned to the club in 2019, but lasted just two years in the job before stepping down again.
