For the last few campaigns, Liverpool have been unerringly Manchester City’s main and most consistent Premier League title challenger but Jurgen Klopp’s heavily beleaguered side now find themselves all at odds scrambling for a top four spot this season as they currently lie sixth in the table.
Despite the turmoil the Reds are undergoing, Liverpool boss Klopp has had the gumption to deliver an honest verdict on Arsenal and Manchester City’s Premier League title fight this season, as the Gunners are still in the lead, five points ahead of the reigning champions, after their most recent, emphatic win against Everton on Wednesday night.
Klopp’s Merseyside outfit have been City’s most persistent, and main, challengers in recent seasons clearly, themselves finally winning the Premier League title back in 2019 after a long drought stretching 3 decades. Yet, incredibly, Liverpool now find themselves having been surpassed by the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United as they push themselves hard to press on in fighting for a top four spot heading towards the end of the season.
The Gunners’ Mikel Arteta has led his valiant side to the summit of the table even as the race continues to heat up his ahead of a crucial run of fixtures in March and April. Arsenal will be focused on maintaining their advantage over City this weekend with Arteta’s men all geared up to take on relegation-threatened Bournemouth, as Guardiola’s team prepare to face off against an in-form Newcastle.
Liverpool are now left with no options but to mount a concerted, late charge to carve out a place in the top four after a dismal season by their lofty standards as they now sit sixth, a far cry from their success in recent seasons.
This has prompted Klopp to now offer his honest verdict on the title race between Arsenal and City, admitting he couldn’t be ‘less interested’ in other teams challenging at the top of the table.
Speaking ahead of the Reds’ clash against United this weekend, Klopp said: “Arsenal, my God. They are flying and having results and playing really good football.
“I respect that a lot. Man City is Man City, playing good football and are there as well.”
