Wayne Rooney’s Everton comments should worry Frank Lampard

Everton gaffer Frank Lampard’s job is evidently dangling by the proverbial thread amid the Toffees’ horrendous season and ex Manchester United dangerman Wayne Rooney is apparently one of the hot candidates touted as a replacement for the former Chelsea striker.

Comments resurfacing from Rooney could be compromising for Frank Lampard as the latter is just barely clinging to his job with the Toffees who last won a game on 22 October. Enraged supporters staged a mass walkout from Goodison Park during their dismal defeat to Brighton on Tuesday.

While Lampard is expected to stay in charge for the upcoming FA Cup encounter with Manchester United, he is apparently on the verge of being sacked, despite having masterminded a harrowingly narrow escape last season but are now again back in the relegation zone with just three games won all season. The pressure can only be expected to be ramped up amid comments resurfacing from Rooney that he is clearly eyeing the job.

Rooney had spent two spells at Everton as a player and is probably best remembered for having famously scored a last-minute wonder-goal against Arsenal in 2002.

During his tenure at the Rams, where he earned praise for leading the club during their financial problems, he had been approached to replace Rafa Benitez at Everton. And it should be some cause for anxiety for Lampard as the job at Goodison Park remains one Rooney still has his eye on.

“Obviously Everton and Manchester United are the two clubs who are really close to my heart so to manage one of them two would be a dream. I’m still gaining a lot of experience from what I’m doing,” Rooney told CNN in November.
