Luis Enrique expresses relief after PSG  narrowly survived Aston Villa’s spirited comeback

PSG advanced with a 5-4 aggregate score, despite nearly squandering a four-goal lead during the second leg at Villa Park.

PSG seemed firmly in control after Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes extended their aggregate advantage to 5-1. However, Villa mounted a stunning fightback with goals from Youri Tielemans, John McGinn, and Ezri Konsa. Gianluigi Donnarumma made crucial saves to preserve PSG’s lead, including denying Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio during pivotal moments.

Reflecting on the match, Enrique admitted, “I don’t think this team has ever been dominated like that before. For 10 minutes, we really suffered.” He acknowledged that complacency had set in after PSG’s strong start: “At 2-0, the game became too easy, and we got overconfident. Villa had nothing to lose and took risks.”

Enrique praised Villa’s intensity and aerial strength but highlighted his team’s resilience. “We’re a small team not built for defending crosses into the box, but overcoming such challenges will make us stronger,” he said.

The drama unfolded late in the second half as Villa pushed relentlessly for an equalizer. However, PSG’s defensive organization and Donnarumma’s heroics ensured their progression to the semifinals. Enrique added, “Moments like these improve our team—we’ll grow from this experience.”

Despite Villa’s valiant effort, PSG held firm to secure their place in the next round of Europe’s elite competition. The French club now awaits their semifinal opponent while Villa can take pride in their historic Champions League campaign.
