Eddie Howe likely to miss remainder of season after hospitalisation

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support following his recent hospitalisation with pneumonia. The 47-year-old, who had been feeling unwell for several days, was admitted to hospital last Friday after continuing to prepare for Newcastle’s Premier League clash against Manchester United.

Despite Howe’s absence, the Magpies delivered a stunning 4-1 victory over the Red Devils, showcasing the high-intensity, attacking football that has become synonymous with his leadership. Howe followed the match from his hospital bed, undoubtedly proud of his team’s performance.

In a heartfelt statement released by the club, Howe said:

“A huge thank you to everyone connected with Newcastle United and the wider football community for your messages and warm wishes. They have meant a lot to me and my family. I also want to pay tribute to our incredible NHS and the hospital staff who have treated me. I’m immensely grateful for the specialist care I’m receiving and, after a period of recovery, I look forward to being back as soon as possible.”

While Howe focuses on his recovery, assistant manager Jason Tindall and first-team coach Graeme Jones will take charge of Newcastle’s upcoming Premier League fixtures against Crystal Palace (April 16) and Aston Villa (April 19).

Tindall emphasised that Howe’s health is the club’s top priority and that no specific timeline has been set for his return.

“We’ve had minimal dialogue since the announcement. He’s in the best possible hands and will come back only when he feels 100% ready to lead the team,” Tindall explained.

“There is no exact timeframe; we will assess day by day and follow the guidance of his medical team.”

Just last month, Howe etched his name into Newcastle’s history by leading the club to their first domestic trophy in 70 years—a memorable 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.

The football world now wishes Eddie Howe a swift and full recovery as Newcastle United continue their Premier League campaign under interim leadership.
