Liverpool’s decision to stay out of the January transfer market wasn’t entirely unexpected, but it’s clear that new signings will be necessary at the end of the season.
Manager Arne Slot is looking to strengthen specific positions, particularly left-back, while also considering the futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah, all of whom are in negotiations for new contracts.
In a discussion with Football Insider, pundit Brown suggested that Liverpool should pursue Jarrod Bowen from West Ham United at the end of the current season, potentially as a replacement for Salah.
“Bowen is a tremendous asset for West Ham. Whether he plays on the wing or through the middle, he consistently delivers quality performances,” Brown stated.
“His progress since joining from Hull has been remarkable. He’s one of those players who could easily step up to a top club. While he’s settled at West Ham, circumstances can change quickly in football, and it might be time for him to seek a new challenge.”
Brown highlighted that Bowen would be an excellent fit for Liverpool, especially given their current situation with Salah.
“If Arsenal were to lose Saka for any reason, Bowen would excel there. Liverpool has been monitoring him closely because he could seamlessly replace Salah if needed. He would do a fantastic job for them.”
Bowen has proven to be a thorn in Liverpool’s side over the years, having scored three times against them. While he would certainly enhance Liverpool’s squad depth, questions remain about whether he possesses the quality to be a regular starter for one of Europe’s elite teams. At 28 years old, there are concerns that Bowen may soon be past his peak, prompting Liverpool to consider younger right-sided attacking options instead.
The hope remains that Salah will sign an extension, which would lessen the urgency to bring in reinforcements in that position.
In summary, while Liverpool has its sights set on Bowen as a potential signing, they must weigh his age and current form against their long-term goals for squad development.
