Premier League goal-scoring legend Alan Shearer is adamant Fulham deserved their triumph at Old Trafford on Saturday after their dominating performance over Manchester United across the entire duration of the match.
A large portion of the United fanbase claimed that it was one of their most lackluster, uninspired showings of the season so far.
Fulham had been win-less away from home since day one of the campaign, but boldly ventured into United’s territory brimming with confidence that they could get one over on Erik ten Hag and his men, which they did.
This was the Cottagers’ first victory against United in any competition since December 2009, was also their first at the stadium since 2003.
Post-match, Harry Maguire, obviously in denial of some sort, claimed that the first half was ‘pretty even’ while his boss Ten Hag – also equally in denial – exuded confident that his players showed ‘great character’ – a sentiment largely not shared amongst the United faithful, nor PL great, Shearer, who shared his candid verdict on the PL’s MatchDay Extra.
“I couldn’t disagree more with Harry Maguire and Erik ten Hag there,” he said.
“I thought Fulham really deserved to win that game. They missed so many chances. Then, for Fulham to get the winner in the way they did in the last couple of minutes, I thought they deserved it.”
This is why the opinions and unbiased analyses of proven football legends like Shearer are so invaluable, as opposed to those proffered by individuals with vested interests who incidentally suffer from denial when things don’t turn out their way.
