Gabriel Jesus has staunchly refuted claims he and Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson have had a fall out and says they came together after Manchester City’s 1-0 defeat at Arsenal.
Teammates at Eastlands before Arsenal forked out £45million to bring Jesus to north London last year, both players are still colleagues on the Brazil team. The Gunners forward spoke up to downplay suggestions of a rift between the pair when Arsenal and City squared up last weekend in an intense Premier League clash where the Cityzens were defeated after another Brazilian, Grabiel Martinelli, bagged a late 86th-minute winner.
It was sheer jubilation and ecstasy around the Emirates as Arsenal leapfrogged City to move joint top of the Premier League table with bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur, with the latter ahead on goal difference. However tensions spilled over on the pitch after the whistle had blown at full-time as players from both sides engaged with fury.
Kyle Walker and Erling Haaland had tense moments with Arsenal’s set-piece coach Nicolas Jover while a frustrated Ederson was seen to confront Jesus. However, the former Manchester City striker man played down the situation, insisting that confrontation is all part of the game and that there is no discomfort between him and Ederson.
“I have a good relationship (with Ederson),” Jesus said on international duty.
“Not just with Ederson. But on the pitch it’s normal (to get heated). Ederson and I spent a lot of time together at City and we were very happy.
“He knows how fond I am of him and I also know how fond he is of me. But on the pitch, he defends his team and I defend mine. It was a moment when we were winning and it’s not easy to beat them.
“We were winning and I held the ball there. Anyway, he ended up giving me a push but, afterwards, everything was normal. We came together talking. That’s it.”
