Ange Postecoglou has been dealt a great hand as club captain Son Heung-Min is now set to remain at the club.
Tottenham have ensured that key steps are being taken to secure Son Heung-Min in place and make sure he does not take after Harry Kane in leaving the club when his contract expires. The 30-year-old England captain was sold this summer with just 12 months left on his deal despite attempts having been made by chairman Daniel Levy to renew Kane’s contract but were unable to come to a mutual agreement and eventually had to let their all-time top scorer leave for Bayern Munich earlier this year.
The club are determined not to repeat the same mistake as far as their South Korean talisman is now concerned. Although last extended in 2021, Son’s contract is good for another two years with an option to trigger a further year. Speculation had been rife over an offer from Saudi Arabia but Son is now leading the line for Ange Postecoglou.
“I have many things to do in the Premier League. Money doesn’t matter to me now, and the pride of playing football, to play in my favourite league is important,” he said during pre-season, putting any doubts over an exit to bed.
“I want to play more for Tottenham in the Premier League. I’ll prepare well when I’m back to Spurs.”
Besides captaining the team, he has also taken on a more vital role this season. Having also started the season in exemplary form, it is said the club will take up the option to extend his deal to 2026 in a concerted effort to tie him down for the long haul.
Truth be told, the extension has yet to be triggered and isn’t expected to be anytime soon but the expectation is that it will be done regardless, even if it goes beyond the end of this campaign. Postecoglou is said to have rewarded Son with the team’s captaincy to replace Hugo Lloris after the South Korean scored three times under the Australian coach.
During a fan forum discussion with his manager and Levy, Son was asked about how he found out. “Actually that day I just noticed in the meeting he [Postecoglou] called my name out,” Son admitted.
“It was the most nervous moment in my life because I had to give a speech to the players and looking at the video everyone was just at the back clapping 20 times. It was weird but being captain of this huge club is such an honor.
“I’ll do my best and the team is doing well but that day was the biggest surprise because I didn’t expect but also it was a special day for me.” Unsurprisingly he was then warmly applauded by those watching on and the supporters can now relax in the knowledge that they have more years of Son on the pitch to look forward to.
The South Korean star is approaching 150 goals for the club and will be eagerly looking forward to score a first-ever away win against the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium for the first time in the eagerly-anticipated North London Derby on Sunday.
