Spurs boss Antonio Conte has claimed that Cristian Romero – following his altercation with Marc Cucurella against Chelsea last weekend – does not fear anyone.
A fan favorite ever since he joined Spurs, Romero is unquestionably a delight to watch on the pitch with his incredible quality, but what endears him more to supporters is his fearlessness – even when the ball is not in play.
Although Conte and Thomas Tuchel’s bust-up at the end of the London derby last weekend grabbed the headlines that night, Romero wasn’t distant from the headlines himself as, at the very end of the game, just before Harry Kane’s equaliser, the Argentine stopped Cucurella in his tracks by grabbing his hair. However, despite VAR not deeming it a foul, Conte has claimed that the Argentine needs to have a better understanding of such situations.
Speaking about the 24-year-old, Conte told Football London: “About Cristian, I speak a lot with him.
“For sure, he’s a player who’s really strong physically. He has no fear of anyone but for sure he has to be always really focused to understand the situation, to try to always be better, to improve the situations he needs to improve.”
24-year-old Romero is arguably Tottenham’s best defender and has been excellent for Spurs since he joined them last summer. Admittedly he does have the tendency to blow his top every now and then. His infraction against Cucurella could’ve easily cost him as he could’ve been sent off and that could’ve prevented Tottenham from picking up a point at Stamford Bridge.
Conte knows well enough that Romero needs to wise up to such things and work on his temperament and the gaffer will make sure his charge will in the coming weeks and months.
