The imminent signing England right-back Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid is symbolic of a major coup for relegation-haunted Newcastle United.
They are a select group, Only three Englishmen so far have scored in a World Cup semi-final, namely Sir Bobby Charlton, Gary Lineker and Kieran Trippier, and if the latter feels awkward and incongruous in such distinguished company, it still underlines what a coup it would be for Newcastle to sign him.
Since their takeover by the consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, questions have been rife regarding who would be the potential stars to be lured to Tyneside by Newcastle’s newfound status among the super-affluent, while also increasing suspicions that their plight might deter many a player with options and ambitions.
Half-way through the season, the Magpies have a solitary win to show for all their efforts and gumption. Now only Norwich, Watford and Burnley are within eight points of them and they have hardly any margin for error now.
Trippier’s willingness to become the first arrival of the new era bodes well for the club as right-backs are rarely statement signings yet in a way he is as it would not be erroneous to label him as one of England’s most successful export. His contributions to Atletico Madrid’s winning La Liga with the club’s underdogs, being a cornerstone of its really frugal defense, perhaps ranks him second only to Steve McManaman among English footballers in La Liga in the last three decades.
Trippier could well have been squaring off against Barcelona and Real Madrid next season but is instead quite likely lining up against Barnsley and Rotherham, if the Magpies end up hitting the bottom of the relegation barrel. He could well be one of only 22 players to start for England in the final of a major international tournament who is gamely taking a risk ahead of the 2022 World Cup.
But if there have long been hints that Trippier was keen to return to his homeland, it is notable he was a target for Manchester United last year. In the summer, if not now, he could have attracted suitors higher up the table: indeed both United and his former club Tottenham could benefit from a crosser of his calibre at right-back.
For Newcastle, Trippier is unquestionably a huge upgrade.
