Everton have been given the opportunity to sign Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon, but are yet to make a decision over whether to make a bid, report the Daily Express.
The Merseyside club has been heavily linked with Nunes throughout the summer transfer window so far despite claims having been made that this may be a ploy to crank up interest in the attacking midfielder, who is valued at £20 million.
As it is, Everton have not totally ruled out bidding for Nunes, with that decision being under new boss Rafael Benitez’s jurisdiction.
The Toffees already have some hardened battlers like Tom Davies and Allan who are able to play in the middle of the pitch and the inclusion of Nunes would mean an injection of creativity from deeper areas as he would increase the technical proficiency of their midfielders.
Nunes is hailed as one of the best players on the ball in Portugal, with his former teammate Goncalo Santos waxing lyrical about him in the Liverpool Echo.
“It’s unbelievable when he has the ball at his feet. Nobody can catch him; it’s impossible because he’s too fast,” he said.
“Matheus is a box-to-box player. He’s not so strong like midfielders in the Premier League but he’s very fast. He’s very good with the ball because he is a Brazilian boy. They know how to play with the ball.”
Coming from a player like Santos, those comments will surely warm up the hopes and raise the expectations of Everton fans about the potential deal.
But whether Benitez will take up the offer of being able to sign the midfielder now remains to be seen.
