Barcelona announced on Sunday that Lionel Messi will miss Tuesday’s La Liga match at home to Eibar due to an ankle injury. The club said Messi is currently undergoing treatment on his right ankle and will not return to training until the new year, with the club facing Huesca on January 3.
It is unclear when Messi suffered the injury as Messi had returned to his home city of Rosario via private jet immediately after scoring in Barca’s 3-0 win away to Real Valladolid on December 22.
Apparently Barcelona had granted him permission to remain in Argentina and miss the club’s return to training on Monday. The club subsequently announced that he was struggling with an ankle injury.
In a statement published on the club’s official website, Barcelona said:
“First-team player Lionel Messi is completing treatment for his right ankle and is expected to return to training after the Eibar match.”
That means he should be fit for the trip to Huesca on January 3.
