Ever since Bundesliga return in actions on May 16, Wolfsburg are one of the teams struggling with consistency.
Wolfsburg resume the league with a 2-1 away win over Augsburg, but lost 2-0 at home to Dortmund.
They bounced back with style as they beat Bayer Leverkusen 4-1 away from home. That celebration is short-lived however, as they lost at home again, this time 2-1 defeat to Eintract Frankfurt.
Such inconsistency forced Wolfsburg to remain 6th in the current Bundesliga standing, the same position they held at the end of last season.
It was something that Maximilian Arnold admitted on how Wolfsburg need to finish in a better position this season.
“ I think in many ways. I think we drew too many games, we also had some unnecessary defeats. I think when we’re a bit more resolute at the back and up front, then we can improve.”
Arnold rose from Wolfsburg youth academy in 2011 and has since made more than 200 appearances for Die Wolfe, despite being only 26 years old at the moment.
This season, he was appointed 3rd captain, behind captain Joshua Guilavogui and vice-captain Koen Casteels, a leadership skills that is thought to be an important aspect to Arnold.
“I think on the pitch you have to set a good example and have a good presence. You feel a bit inhibited at first because you understand every word.
“But you have to shake off this timidity so that you can play with freedom and approach in such a way that you are 100% there. I just try to convey that.”
Arnold played the most games in his team, appearing in 38 matches and scored 5 goals in all competitions this season.
But for him, the only thing that matters is the results.
“Now, mentally, you have to program your mind in such a way that on Saturday at 3:30 when the game starts you’re switched on.
“Then for 90 or 95 minutes, no matter what’s going on around you, you have to put that out of your mind.
“It’s a game and it’s about 3 points and you have to give it your all to achieve that. I think the teams that can do that best, will pick up the most points.”
