There aren’t many players these days who have been around since the beginning of Juventus’ current run of dominance in the Serie A. In fact they can be counted on one hand.
That said, it certainly doesn’t look like the Italian juggernaut’s current stable of trusty older stallions is about to be put to pasture come this summer regardless of how the season turns out with the pandemic.
Hot in the airwaves last week was the report that goalkeeper extraordinaire Gianluigi Buffon is all set to sign on the dotted line to extend his comeback to Juventus for another season. The same applies now for the man who took over the captain’s armband from Buffon nearly two years ago.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Giorgio Chiellini will be signing on for another season as his current deal that is set to expire at the end of the current campaign.
According to the report, Chiellini signing a contract extension is pretty much a “formality” at this point and doesn’t come as a surprise as he’s apparently healthy again after having sustained a serious injury in recent months.
Chiellini’s season has been an eventful one, having been actively involved in the recent brokering of the agreement that saw Juventus players and high-ranking coaches foregoing a substantial portion of their salaries. And that’s before factoring in the fact that Juventus signed his probable successor, Matthijs de Ligt, last summer.
However, after all’s said and done, the fact that Chiellini is back healthy again and showing no drawbacks from his major knee surgery augurs well as a positive sign that he will be donning his boots for many more matches hopefully into his late 30s.
Which will be pretty good for Juventus, naturally.
