Five Standard Liege players were caught by police after organizing a barbecue party on the weekend in the town of Hasselt, 60km from Liege, despite restrictions due to COVID-19.
Police forced them to disperse as one of the players Obbi Oulare confirmed the incident but said police overreacted.
“We were not holding a party but apparently the neighbours called the police. I don’t think I did anything wrong. I understand the police are doing their job but they mustn’t overdo it,” the 24-year-old told the Belgian newspaper.
The club then fined them for 250 euros.
Belgium has been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic, with some 3,600 deaths.
