Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes that the club’s inability to win the Premier League title is not due to a lack of mental toughness but rather the absence of a prolific striker akin to Thierry Henry or Ian Wright.
Keown suggests that Arsenal’s struggles are primarily caused by an injury crisis that has depleted their attacking options, including key players like Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, and Gabriel Martinelli.
Despite Arsenal’s impressive defensive record, they have struggled to score goals, which Keown attributes to the makeshift front line they have been forced to use. He emphasizes that the incoming sporting director, Andrea Berta, must prioritize signing a striker who can transform the team’s attacking prowess.
Keown remains optimistic about the squad’s potential, highlighting the strength of their defense and midfield. However, he acknowledges that the lack of a top-class striker has hindered their ability to challenge for the title. Arsenal’s current position, 15 points behind leaders Liverpool, underscores the need for significant reinforcements in the upcoming transfer window.
Keown dismisses the notion that Arsenal’s recent drop-off is due to a mentality issue, instead pointing to the normal frustrations that come with dominating possession without scoring. He believes that once key players return from injury and the team strengthens its attacking lineup, they can regain momentum and compete more effectively in the future.
